The yoga and Vedic lifestyle cruise on board the Superstar Virgo has been organised by the Hardwar Patanjali Yogpeeth (co-founded by Ramdev) and the Kolkata based Vishwa Jagriti Mission. For Star Cruises, it is one of the biggest “special interest cruises” with a group of 1,062 people from different countries on board for the Indian yoga tour.

An estimate by the Pacific-Asia Travel Association (PATA) says nearly eight million Indians travel abroad every year and outbound travel from India has been growing at 10.15 percent every year since 2001. International tour operators put the outbound tourism boom to rapid economic growth, competitive pricing, new airports in urban heartlands, air liberalisation which facilitates connectivity, and the rise of the Indian middle class.

Tourists love the relaxed nature of the holidays. Eighty-year-old H.P. Nopany, a former shipping tycoon from Kolkata who now heads the Shipowners’ and Agents’ Association, says the “overall feeling of being part of a spiritual cruise is very nice”. “The ship is comfortable and the ambience is so clean. There is virtually no pollution. I have been eating so much more since I boarded the ship,” said Nopany.

Press it – Ramdev Swami Yoga Books & DVDs Here
The 2008 edition of DSF is all set to take thousands of enthusiasts through a three-day holistic sojourn as Swami Ramdev conducts the Eurostar yoga camp. The yoga camp will be conducted at the Airport Expo Dubai, between 6.00 am and 8.30 am, from 25 to 27 January, 2008. The yoga exponent has recently conducted highly successful workshops in the US, Britain, East Africa and Canada.

More than 8000 people from across the Middle East region are expected to attend the workshop that will focus on yogic postures with the breathing techniques called Pranayama, and meditation. According to Swami Ramdev, the human body is composed of five elements- space of vacuum, air, fire, water and earth. Air is the most important, as it is the life force that keeps the body alive. This air, when inhaled during breathing, is called Prana. Pranayama includes the techniques that control this life force.

Swami Ramdev puts equal emphasis on mediation and believes that, through Pranayama and meditation, we attain a transcendental state of consciousness where the mind is free from thoughts or impressions. In this state, our nervous system releases good hormones which help to reduce stress and stress related conditions like hypertension, depression, heart diseases, hormonal imbalances etc.

Yousif Mubarak, DSF Events, Operations, and Logistics Director said, ‘Playing host to a yoga camp such as this only indicates the diverse kind of activities within every DSF edition. Our aim during every DSF is to present events and activities of the highest quality, and having a world renowned expert like Swami Ramdev for the DSF 2008-Eurostar yoga camp only enhances the quality element. Indeed, this unique event is another exciting addition to DSF’s bouquet of activities.’

The yoga camp is being organized by the Dubai based Eurostar Group in association with DSF 2008, as part of the group’s charity initiatives. Elaborating on the benefits of the camp Raju T. Jethwani, Chairman, Eurostar Group said, ‘Stress has become the bane of modern living. Like any other modern society, we are not immune to this phenomena. This workshop provides an excellent opportunity to learn the techniques that help to manage stress and improve the quality of one’s life. The workshop assumes added relevance as Swamiji will also address the health issues and diseases that are peculiar to this region.’

Swami Ramdev will demonstrate breathing exercises which will provide relief to people suffering from diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, leucoderma, depression, Parkinson’s Disease, insomnia, migraine, hypertension, high cholesterol, hyperthyroidism, arthritis, cervical spondylitis, hepatitis, chronic renal failure, cancer, cirrhosis of liver, gastric troubles, constipation and acidity.

The proceeds from the yoga camp will go to Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar, India founded by Swami Ramdev.

Swami Ramdev brings Pranayama teaching to America

January 9, 2008

CHICAGO – Swami Ramdev, a world renowned yogi in Sanskrit, Ayruveda and Vedic Philosophy came to Chicago in early July from his native India to teach his unique pranayama (breathing exercises. Several thousand people turned out for the five-day camp in an indoor sports arena to learn the Swami’s seven types of breathing exercises through his yoga to help them lose weight and improve physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Renowned for his yoga style that is less asanas (postures) and more pranayama, Ramdev toured the United States this summer to yoga camps in New York, New Jersey and Chicago. The trip has also helped the yogi raise funds to continue his research work on Ayurveda and yoga.

Ramdev gained fame for his stand against the fast food and carbonated beverage industries in India, in his effort to encourage healthy lifestyle changes in India. Praised for this work and for his training, he was invited by the United Nations as a special guest to a recent “Stand Up Against Poverty” conference.

The event organizers Anu and Bharat Malhotra gave people an opportunity to interact with Swamiji at a press conference in Chicago which served as a kick off to the five day camps. Swamiji briefly explained the seven types of breathing exercises (Bhastrika, Kapal Bhati, Bahaya, Anulom Vilom, Bhramri, Udgeeth, and Agisaar Pranayama) he teaches in his classes and how actually they help in curing the diseases. He guaranteed that by attending one of the sessions people will be able to lose up to two to six pounds per session. Later on people had an opportunity to ask Swamiji question related to their health and also share their experiences on how Pranayam have helped them in curing some of the incurable diseases and living a healthy lifestyle.

Before the press conference Swami Ramdevji was kind enough to share his knowledge of Yoga and Pranayam with this exclusive interview:

Baba what can you say about Ayurveda in relation to Shudhi, Sidhi and Kundal-Nijagrati?

Ayurveda is optimum for Shudhi (body purification) but achieving Sidhi through Ayurveda I cannot say much about it. Janm-Aushadh, Mantra and Tap can lead you to Sidhi but attaining Sidhi through Ayurveda, me and others have not seen anything like this before and therefore I cannot comment on it. However for sure one can definitely attain Shudhi through Ayurveda.

Why did you decide to concentrate on yoga?

When I was nine years old, I used to observe that people did both Aasan (like Chakraasan, Shirshasana) and Pranayam (Abhiyantar). At that time Kapalbhati and Anulomb-Vilomb did not exist. People will fill their lungs with air and will hold it in as long as possible even to the extent that some will faint. People used to do Yoga for exercises and body building. So at that time we used do these Pranayam and Yoga in a disarranged manner. We initially started doing Pranayam for Kundali-Nijagran. When you do Pranayam at a very high speed, several things start happening within your body. This will result in some people will start laughing, others start screaming, and some will start shaking. When I started teaching Pranayam I did it along with meditation (dhyan). That’s why I always start my session with recital of Om and end it with Om and in between I also do Om recital too. This resulted in curing many diseases such as asthma, vision, hypertension, diabetes etc… I started teaching Pranayam with the intention of meditation, but these cures came as by-products. In general I have been practicing yoga for the past 15 years.

In America you need FDA approval for drugs to be commercially available in the market. What are you doing for Ayurvedic drugs to be available in America?

We have started providing these medicines under the name herbal food supplement. Ayurvedic medicines are usually made from herbs. I do not know much about the FDA apporoval. I do know that Ayurvedic medicines are a part of your daily diet e.g. you need Vitamin C for your eyes which are present in Amla (Indian Gooseberry) and now this is not a medicine, salt or hormone, it would be a part of your food. You can order these medicines on-line worldwide with the exception of cancer medicines which contain ingredients that might be objectionable to authorities of other countries. Along with this we are establishing centers across America where you will be able to buy books, DVDs, CDs and as well as Ayurvedic medicine from our Institute.

Do you claim that Ayurveda can cure every disease?

I have never claimed that Ayurveda can claim every disease. You have to do Yoga and Pranayam along with the Ayurvedic medicines for them to be effective. I claim this and I also have shown that I can cure most of the diseases with Pranayam and along with the use of Ayurvedic medicines for certain diseases.

What is a message that you would like to send to the youngsters worldwide on why it is so important to do yoga?

I would like to send three main messages to the youngsters. One is that you should take care of your physical health which is getting ruined by eating burgers, pizza and fast food. Obesity is on an all time high in kids nowadays. Secondly, the world is not looking at the biggest problem which is the genetic disorder getting transferred from parents to the kids. Genetic disorders are transferred without exception and there is no cure or medicine for this. This will be a big challenge to the next generation. Third is kids are becoming drug addicts and losing their emotional control. Once they get into this habit they get stuck deeper into the trap. Save kids by practicing Yoga and Pranayam. Kids can start doing Pranayam at the age of three and the five years old can start doing Aasan.

What will you like to say about organic food vs. conventional food?

Organic foods which grow naturally are definitely good for your health. Conventional foods are grown by using fertilizer and pesticides. Fertilizer increases the natural growth rate. This results in fruits and vegetables being not able to retain their proper and natural mineral and vitamin content. Pesticides save crops form diseases. So I am against the food grown by artificial means. But I am fine with hybrid food as long as they are allowed to grow by natural means.

How much one should do Aasan and how much of it one should do Pranayam?

You should do 90% Pranayam and 10% Aasan. Breathing cures asthma, hypertension, diabetes and other diseases and not Yoga exercises. This is a big myth in US and in European countries that Yoga cures these diseases. Pranayam cures the diseases and Yoga is for exercise.

Do you have any plans on opening an Ashram in the US like Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar?

Several people have requested us to do so and we are looking at all the options. For now we are definitely going to open small centers in US which will be teaching Yoga and Pranayam. At this time it will be difficult to have a Yoga institution in US like the one in Haridwar. When the time comes we will have an Ashram in US and this will help Indians over here to rejuvenate their culture as well as will help people from other parts of the world.

Can Pranayam cure cancer?

Our body cells need oxygen to function properly. Pranayam increases oxygen content in our body and I have shown to cure cancer with Pranayam. If you do not believe me you can read a recently published report from John Hopkins Hospital where they have shown that “Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment”. With Pranayam blood, prostate, and breast cancer can be cured within 3-6 months. I have cured cancer patients of stage 1 and 2 and I have cured some last stage cancer patients as well.

Do you claim that AIDS can be cured by Pranayam?

No. I have never claimed that AIDS can be cured by Pranayam, but I have said it might be a possibility. What I have shown is that you can increase the white blood cell to the virus ratio with Pranayam.

What is your normal daily routine?

I wake up at 3 am and then I do my personal Yoga and Pranayam for two hours. After that I teach Yoga and Pranayam for three hours. Then I do two hours of self mediation. After that I spend some time for coordinating research and then I meet with people e.g. people with incurable diseases. If there is an evening session then I teach it. I eat two times once between 10-11 am and again from 7-8 PM but if I have an evening session than after the session. I eat salad, cooked green vegetables, fruits and cow milk and I do not take any grain, pulse or rice. It is important to know that there is 24 hours in a day and taste only lasts for 24 minutes. For 24 min of pleasure we are punishing our bodies for 23.5 hours, this is not good. When you eat healthy food and exercise you can get a good 6 hours of sleep, work for 16 hours and enjoy a good family life. In food I discourage carbohydrates and emphasize more on proteins and nutrition.

I read somewhere that you want to replace sex education with yoga why is this?

To reduce terrorism and crime you do not show people which ways crime and terrorism it is done. With love you can reduce terrorism and crime. Same thing applies to sex. “Upasana se Vasana ko door kar sakte ho” but not by teaching the way sex is done. Yoga increases self control and this will help younger generation

Ramdev Yoga in America

Popular Indian guru Swami Ramdev’s unique ‘yoga for health’ brand has been launched in the US.

Ramdev started his first camp in Long Island, New York, June 30. Over 1,300 people attended the morning and evening sessions held in a big hall in Nassau Community College.

The swami’s style of yoga has, however, preceded him.

Many camp participants narrated the benefits they have received after following his ‘pranayam’ (yogic breathing techniques) from his DVD/CDs or watching him on cable television.

Ramdev also showed that benefits of yoga are demonstrable and immediate. Ten overweight people volunteered to have their weight checked before and after the session. Amazingly, the weight reduction ranged from 0 to 5 pounds.

The camp participants were predominantly Indian Americans. ‘Every person reported feeling satisfied,’ said Animesh Goenka, a businessman who has organised Ramdev camps in New York and New Jersey. In New Jersey, Goenka has made arrangements for 3,000 participants.

Bhupesh Chandra, a physics student at Columbia University in Manhattan, was told by his parents to attend. ‘It’s been worthwhile,’ he said after the first day of the two-day camp.

Ramdev is accompanied by a group of ayurveda practitioners, who give free consultations to camp participants on the ancient Indian system of medicine.

To coincide with Ramdev’s first yoga camp in the US, Aastha channel is set to launch eight daily programmes in the country July 4, America’s Independence Day. Aastha signal is available in the US on DirecTV.

‘The programmes, already aired in India, are on subjects including Vedas and Upanishads,’ Kirit Mehta, founder and head of Aastha channel, told IANS.

Ramdev’s regular programme teaching asanas (yogic postures) and his pet three pranayams — kapalbhati, bhastrika and anulom-vilom — are the most popular on Aastha which claims a viewership of 300 million globally. This programme is now available in English on weekends in the US.

Asked if Aastha made Ramdev or Ramdev made Aastha, Mehta said: ‘Both happened together!’

Yoga Education with Baba Ramdev

April 14, 2007

Press it – Ramdev Swami Yoga Books & DVDs Here

Education. By none other than His Highness Baba Ramdevji Maharaj (his titles give our Principal a run for her money – I don’t even remember the others).
He talked. About loads of things. But basically yog(a) and pranayam along with, well, demonstrations. He did all these asanas – harasana, chakrasana and er, Others but the most spectacular was well, what he did with his stomach. This guy said that his classmate made up a song for him, “My Stomachs Don’t Lie” How true. He wiggled, he jiggled, he convulsed, he grinded his abs. And he expected us to do the same.
Well, firstly, his entry. He leapt and he bounced onto the platform made for him, wearing a bright saffron dhoti and chunni (or whatever). After he took off his chunni and started doing those leg exercises, we were afraid to look – fearing that any moment now his dhoti would come down.
What was pretty amazing was, well, his speech. At the end, I was convinced that he was Osama bin Laden in disguise (except as Subohi said, Osama looks better and loves his turban too much to take it off, or dye his beard black for that matter) come to brainwash the future generations of India.
So then, his speech. Most of which was spoken in a voice anyone would use with an extremely thick two-year-old. Telling us about the oxygen-carbon dioxide transfer in our mitochondria. And how fizzy drinks are bad for our health. Which was all fine. But then, he made a graaave mistake. He said that we mustn’t eat eggs. The reason? Because apparently, they come out of the same place through which hens shit. So, essentially, if we eat eggs, we are eating their shit. Er, yeah right!!!!!
Then he concluded his speech by saying that there are 2 types of education – yog shiksha and yawn (lol) shiksha, or sex education. He said that while yog shiksha should be essentially imparted, sex education should be banned because it encourages ‘bhatakna’.
And I must not forget the fairness element. He is such a damn racist, man. He kept on saying that drinking milk makes us fairer while coke, since it’s black, makes us darker. That everyone wants skin to be fair and the hair to be dark – which is, apparently, how it is supposed to be. Mr. Ramdev, there are, I presume certain people who AREN’T fair. But just as much desirable. And no amount of milk can make a dark African fair.
According to what he said, pranayam can make a person fair, remove spectacles, reduce high blood pressure, prevent diabetes and allergies.
We were asked to wear track pants or shorts or something for this.
I was wearing these green pajamas, that along with the school’s white T-shirt and my orange bag, made me look like a walking-talking national flag.

ramdev swami dvd and Books in High demand

April 12, 2007

Press it – Ramdev Swami Yoga Books & DVDs Here   It has become a common sight for morning joggers in the capital’s parks – men or women rubbing their nails as they circumambulate, some inhaling through one nostril to do breathing exercises or others attempting to balance precariously on one leg in a yoga posture.
There is increased awareness on the benefits of yoga and the capital is no exception, says a trained yoga instructor.

What Dhirubhai Ambani did to stocks or Bill Gates did to computers, Swami Ramdev has done to yoga – taken it out of the elitist closets and spread it among the masses, says Ashwini Kumar whose classes now attract large number of people from all walks of life.

“There has been a surge in the sales figure of the yoga books in the last two or three years and Yoga Guru Swami Ramde’s books with VCDs are in great demand,” says Murali, head merchandiser.

Top cardiac surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan says, “I do yoga and I would suggest everyone to do it as an essential daily routine but there are some asanas (yoga exercises) which I think not good for cardiac patients.”

Dr Tapan Ghosh, Consultant, Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, feels that people should practice yoga as it improves the immune system. But he also cautions patients not to be dependent only on yoga and if it requires immediate attention then doctors should be consulted.

S C Jain, a resident of Dwarka, has been suffering from knee problem for the last four years. He says, “I was under allopathic treatment since 2003 but I could not get much relief till I started doing yoga around six months back after some of my morning walk partners advised me to take up yoga. I have been feeling much better recently.” Ashish Madan, a cardiac patient, was told by his cardiologist to supplement his medication with yoga.

Tarot card reader Ma Prem Usha believes that yoga helps to grow as an individual and makes the thinking positive and pure. “I am glad that people have now become more aware of it,” she says.

Today’s youth carry a heavy stress load due to odd working hours and irregular diet routines. Lifestyle diseases like spondilitis, hypertension, insomnia, fatigue, nausea, chronic headache, coronary malfunctions, back pain, computer syndrome and dry eyes have created a lot of demand space for yoga among them

Yoga guru Swami Ramdev narrowly escaped a fatal road accident near Muradnagar in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday morning.

Swami Ramdev was on his way to Bhubaneswar where he was being conferred a Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy by Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University.

He said the front portion of the car he had been travelling in had been destroyed, but that he and his fellow occupants escaped unhurt because of “the blessings of God”.

He also attributed his miraculous escape from death to the love of millions of his followers. The Yoga guru claimed that it was God’s desire that he serve the society towards a better health for all through practicing yoga for many more years.

Swami Ramdev had left Haridwar at 0230 hours to catch a flight to Bhubaneswar from Delhi when his vehicle collided head-on with a speeding truck near Muradnagar.

Chancellor of KIIT, Dr A Samanta, was quoted by UNI as saying, “The University was honoured that such a great saint had agreed to be honoured with the Doctor of Philosophy, the first ever Honorary Degree given to him by any University.”

He added that it was their duty to award those who contributed to the society and Ramdev had done so in a big way.
